Educator Gratitude Gifts - The Impact of an Educator
A note from Superintendent Tim Collins
I was fortunate to grow up in a small community that valued education. The school system was abundant with teachers, instructional assistants, secretaries and coaches that valued getting to know every student. It did not take me years of reflection to understand that these adults truly cared about me as an individual. I recognized, at the time, how fortunate I was to be part of such a strong community.
Ron Walters was our Little League baseball coach, a member of the church choir, a volunteer for the Lion's Club Activities, our high school football coach, and our high school social studies teacher. He demanded respect from his students and his athletes. There was no question that he set extremely high expectations for each and every student in his classroom and he physically pushed you as an athlete to the point of near exhaustion. Mr. Walters was also there to pick you up when the outcome was not what you wanted. He had the ability to motivate you and build your self esteem to the highest level of confidence. I left his educational classroom, athletic classroom, and life lesson classroom believing that I could reach any goal that I set for myself. I only wish at the time I had a way of showing my appreciation for his dedication, commitment and belief in me as a person.
The Hastings Public Schools Foundation has come up with a unique and creative way for individuals in our community to show their appreciation for someone in the school district who has had a positive impact on a student's life. If the Educator Gratitude Gift program would have been around when I was in high school, I know that my parents would have made a donation in Mr. Walter's name. This program, even though Mr. Walters did not teach in the Hastings School District, will allow me to make a donation in his honor and he will be notified that I made that donation out of respect for the life lessons that he instilled in me 35 years ago. Ron Walters donated countless hours to our community and he will be proud to learn that I gave back to my community...in his name.
Please join me as I honor my former educators by placing your order for an Educator Gratitude Gift to recognize those who made or are making a difference in your own life or that of your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
